One Response to “Triple Daredevil Review… Yellow, Father, and the Man Without Fear”

Hi there,

I agree with you on your “father” review. Terrible story. And the retconning of Matt’s past -which somehow blames him for the serial killings- is absolutely trashy. As someone else put it: Matt lost his sight as the result of a heroic action, and Quesada’s story just trashes these origins.

One comment on “yellow” though. You wrote: ” In this book, Jack Murdock is killed while Matt Murdock is studying in Law School”.

In fact, This was the actual DD original origin. Yes, jack was killed when Matt was at college, and he and Foggy attended Jack’s last fight. it was Miller in his “Man Without Fear” Miniseries (the excellent Millerwork which you also review) that retconned Matt’s origins into losing his father at a younger age. This was followed by the DD film and now everyone thinks that this is the canon origin. But it is not

But in fact, in the regular series, Miller told Daredevil’s story sticking to his classic origins. After Miller’s “MWF”, some authors have written stories in which Matt looses his father while barely a child (i.e. DeMatteis, Bendis), others have stuck to Daredevil’s original origin story (Brubaker) where Matt looses his father as a young man attending college.

Personally, I prefer the classic origins, to me, they make more sense: the retconned one leaves me with the blank about how a poor blind orphan of Hell’s Kitchen (without his father’s or Stock’s help) manages to get to college. And, as someone else mentioned in CBR, ,aking Matt loosing Jack at an early age, makes him a copy of the Batman origins, of sorts (but then Bruce Wayne is a RICH orphan, left with a minder and a butler to care about him, but Matt is left entirely alone).

Another reason why I prefer the classic origins, which are recreated in the “Yellow” series, is the role they give to Foggy in the DD Mythos: in that way Nelson -who is the only person left in the world for Matt when Jack dies- is even more like the brother Matt never had.

Please forgive me for the peroration about that point. I have really liked your reviews ;D
